Introducing the Not Another Curbside Podcast!

A new podcast about the mental side of physician excellence.

You know the curbside. You’re already behind, someone has one quick question, and lunch has quietly given up on you.

This isn’t one more thing asking something from you. It’s time with people who get the job, care deeply about doing it well, and can still have a good time talking about it.

Taylor is an orthopedic surgeon. Chase is a family physician. Michele is a performance coach who works with physicians, professional athletes, and CEOs.

Each week, they start with a quote from sports, leadership, medicine, or life and see whether it survives contact with the OR, the clinic, and home. They talk about the cases that stick, the mistakes that feel too personal, the pressure to hold everything together, and the strange experience of being home while your brain is still at work.

The idea behind the show is simple: the next level of physician performance is mental. At least this part comes with better company and fewer lectures.

NOT ANOTHER CURBSIDE TRAILER TRANSCRIPT:

So, you’re moving in a hundred directions at once. You have four patients on your mind and you’re about to see the next four. You can’t stop thinking about all these difficult cases and all the things you still have to do. And then just like that, boom. Someone grabs you and says, “Do you have a moment for a curbside?”

“Hey, I know we just finished Thanksgiving lunch, but do you mind if I show you this thing on my inner thigh real quick in the bathroom?”

“I’m looking at this EKG. Would you mind eyeballing with me if you have a moment?”

“Hey, not an official consult here. Just wanted to put this on your radar in case it comes up later.”

That is personal with me cuz guess what? It’s coming up later.

This is not another curbside.

I think one thing that physicians—you’ve been trained in every aspect of what you do, but the one thing you haven’t been trained in is managing your mind. And if there’s anything that we take away from our coaching practice and from this podcast, we want y’all to feel like you know you are learning the skill sets to do that on a daily basis. Like manage your mind and not let it manage you.

Working harder and trying harder doesn’t change the 10%. You know, it’s like it’s still going to all the stuff that encounters that you encounter during your day like you can’t change that. What you can change is the bigger piece of the pie, you know, your response to it. You’re not going to control if the case has an add-on for some reason, right? You know, you’re not going to control if something in your case isn’t there and you’re going to have to be able to respond to it. And I think one thing that I’ve learned more and more from doing this is that the people are watching how you respond. I mean, it’s like physicians are probably some of the worst with this, you know.

No, I think I’m so glad you said that, too, because that’s exactly where my mind was. I was like the flip side of this.

I wasn’t going to say that.

Yeah, we talked about the positive response, but we really, you know, physicians have a medical degree in complaining.

I do think we lost Taylor Michelle.

Yeah, I noticed that.

That looks like his power shut off.

I wish—I wish I was making this up. Literally, the entire power in my townhome just shut off for like 5 seconds.

Yeah, it’s all about the pivot. That’s a next-play mentality. Now we move on and keep recording.

I know Taylor and I have never come home in a bad mood, right? Never come home and not been mentally ready for the next shift, right?

No.

Discomfort for a high performer is throttling down.

If you do like get those reps in and do that, you will see a profound change in how you show up.
